Classic horror author H.P. Lovecraft is mostly known for his stories about the indescribable: colours from space, massive stone blocks in the middle of the ocean that defy three-dimensionality, and cruel gods whose dark presence doesn’t require any physical form. But when this horror virtuoso does describe a monster for once (one whose mere sight drives seamen into madness within seconds!), naturally it instantly becomes part of horror history.
